Important milestone for the permanent implementation of the joint initiative of the HZI and the MHH

The Centre for Individualised Infection Medicine (CiiM), a joint initiative of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) and the Hannover Medical School (MHH), is tackling urgent challenges in infection medicine with the aim of an individual prognosis and diagnosis of infectious diseases and a derived optimised and customised prevention and therapy for the benefit of the individual patient. For this purpose, CiiM combines - currently virtually - clinical and scientific expertise from infection research and medicine for a future-oriented individualised infection medicine. With the laying of the foundation stone for our own CiiM building, we reach an exciting milestone for the permanent implementation of this vision.

On their joint path towards infection medicine tailored to individual patient (groups), the HZI and the MHH set an important cornerstone for this development back in 2015 with the founding of the initially virtual CiiM. CiiM will realise a new quality of collaboration between research, data science and the clinic to explore individual characteristics and their influence on susceptibility to infections and the success of available therapies. The goal is to treat patients with infections in a way that is ideally adapted and optimised to the specific needs and requirements of each individual.

The CiiM mission is now to be implemented even more effectively in a building of its own with approx. 2,100 m2 of usable space in the direct vicinity of the MHH and the other research institutions of the biomedicine site Hannover (planned total investment sum of 24.9 million euros, proportionally financed with 16.56 million euros from the federal government, 6.84 million euros from the state of Lower Saxony and 1.5 million euros from HZI's own contribution). The CiiM building will allow patient data and samples to be systematically stored, processed and analysed with state-of-the-art technologies under one roof. It will thus bundle the internationally unique expertise from clinical practice, research and data science in a transdisciplinary workflow that focuses on the individual infection patient and his or her best possible treatment. In this context, we welcome the commitment of German policy-makers in particular to the global challenges posed by infectious diseases and actively use funding and complementary incentives at international, national and Lower Saxony level to bring the most promising personalised approaches into clinical application.

Due to the high societal significance, it is a distinct honour and pleasure for us and also for the entire research region to celebrate the groundbreaking in a ceremony with invited guests.
